Grading Protection
The NIJ body armor standards (established by the U.S. Dept of Justice’s own National Institute of Justice) have become accepted the world over as one of the most accurate systems for measuring how effectively certain types of ballistics vests stand up to various forms of munition. Vests are graded on a level between 1 and 4, with the lower level vests offering a limited range of protection, and the higher levels offering more effective protection against a powerful, rapid-moving gunshot. The lower level vests offer the advantage of physical comfort and maneuverability, while the higher levels offer a much heavier, thicker layer of protection from a variety of ordnance.
